Full day carrizales, abra malaga

Peru Birding Tours designed a NEW birding extension  at the southern Peru  east-slope, temperate birding at its best, featuring several endemics and scenic Andean puna with easy to moderate terrain with one difficult (optional) hike for Polylepis specialties.

We will work both sides of the eastern cordillera, traveling to the high pass at Abra Malaga along the trace that crosses the Andes on its way to Carrizales (bamboo) at the lower side which we reaguraly see more endemics concentration and mixed flocks and there is time Haypo lake for some andean marshes species.

  • DAY 1: Full day Birding Peñas Carrizales and Polylepis (abra Malaga)

We will pick you up from yor hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo and drive to Peñas for the fisrt birding stop and then We will early start drive for one hour and half to reach a large patch of Chusquea bamboo for: Parodis Hemispingus (endemic), Puna Thistletail, Drab, Three-striped, Black-eared and Black-capped Himispingus, Golden-collared Tanagers, Scarlet-bellied and Hooded Mountain-Tanagers,  White-throated and White-banded Tyrannulets, Puna Ibis, Unstreaked Tit-tyrant (endemic), White-rumped Hawk, Sierran Elaenia, Marcapata Spinetail (endemic), Inca Wren ( endemic) among others species whcih we can find here. We will also have box lunch with as to spend more time birding in the area. After we will reach Abra malaga pass for the entrance to small polylepis forest for some endemics species and if there is time we can explore huaypo lagoon on the way to cusco.
