Machu Picchu 16 days


We designed 16 days birding from the Pacific Ocean visiting for one full day to enjoin Villa Marshes the most diversityt wetland near lima, then Pucusana fishing for a short boat trip. After lunch, we will explore Puerto Viejo area for extra endemics and other target species and finnaly if we still have time we can drive extra 30 minutes to explore the new reserve Lomas de Asia for even more endemic species. 

The second part of the trip is to get Cusco where Machu Picchu is located with some extra birding for endemic species restricted near the Inca Ruin and andean marshes.

The area of Peñas, Abra Malaga Pass and Carrizales (chusquea bambo) provides great diversity of southern endemic species found only along this valley. 

Manu Road the most birdiest road in the world which starts from the mountains passing through mountains forest, cloud forest, hill forest and end in the amazon rainforest. 

 

  • DAY 1: Arrive to Lima

Usually international flights arrive to Peru from 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm. But remind us about your arrival time. Because we will pick you up from the airport. Overnight in Lima

  • DAY 2: Villa Marshes, Pucusana

We will have a short drive to reach Villa Marshes (Pantanos de Villa). Then we will drive furthern south to get Pucusana for our short boat trip to get some extra sea species. After our amazing experience along the west coast we will back to our hotel. Overnight in Lima

Species: Many-Colored Rusth-Tyrant, Wren like Rushbird, Great Grebe, Yellow-Hooded Blackbird, Inca Tern, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Humdbolt Penguin, Guanay and Red-legged Cormorants, Blackish Oystercatcher, Surf Cinclodes (E), Coastal Miner (E), Amazilia Hummingbird, Peruvian Sheartail and many more.

  • DAY 3: Flight to Cusco - Aguas Calientes

Morning flight to cusco and birding drive along the sacred valley and Huaypo lake. Then we will get our hotel in Ollantatambo to leave our suitcases and take small pack for machu picchu. Then our train ride to Aguas Calientes is nonly 1:30 hour.  Night in Hotel

  • DAY 4: Machu Picchu time!

Early buss drive up to Machu Picchu to enjoin Machu Picchu. Then we will do some birding for: Inca Wren(ENDEMIC), Tricolored Brush-finch, Ocellated Piculet, Masked Fruiteater(ENDEMIC), Oleaginous Hemispingus which we have a garantee place to see those birds before our afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo. Overnight in Ollantaytambo Hotel

  • DAY 5: Abra Malaga - Cuzco

Early breakfast and we will drive the pave road up to Peñas area and Abra Malaga Pass (polylepis forest) at 4200 m which there is a chance to explore the small polylepis forest. Then we will explore Carrizales area (chusquea Bamboo) for some mixed flocks and extra endemic species. After our amazing birding time we will drive to Cusco. Overnight in Cusco Hotel.

  • DAY 6: Birding up to Manu Road

Early breakfast and we will drive south of Cusco to Huacarpay Lake for some target species and then we will start our birding drive up to  San Salvador Lake on the way to Paucartambo village and Acjanaco pass where Manu National Park starts, but there are some stops for lunch and some puna species. After the pass our birding time will be officialy in manu where mixed flocks shows up, tanagers and other species. Dinner and night in Wayqecha Station

  • DAY 7: Birding Mountain Cloud forest(3,300m to 2,500m)

After breakfast and lunch we will search for several mixed flocks of birds: Mountain-tanagers, flowerpierces, spinetails, brush-finches, tyrannulets, flycatchers, woodcreepers and may others found at this elevation and forest. Night in Wayqecha Station.

  • DAY 8: Birding Drive to 1,500m

After breakfast, we will start our morning birding along the road looking for some missing species or better landscape photo. We will try to get in time for lyre-tailed nightjar and some owls species before we get to our lodge. Night in Cock of the rock lodge 

  • DAY 9: Birding Cloud forest/Hill forest

We will search after breakfast and lunch the most birdiest road in the road "MANU ROAD". This lodge have feeders outside the dinner room for our cofee break. About the mytical Andean cock of the rock is much easier to see during the day time along the road with much better light for gret photo and amazing view but we can try to visit a small leek. Night in Cock of the Rock lodge 

  • DAY 10: Birding drive to 500m

Afte breakfast we will have full morning birding part of the cloud forest and hill forest for some missing species. After lunch we will drive to Pilcopata village where is the acces to our lodge. Night in Villa Carmen station.

  • DAY 11: Full day Birding 

Today we will spend full morning birding along the bamboo forest and lodge surrounding for sveral amazonian species. Before or after dinner we will try for some owls. Night in Villa Carmen

  • DAY 12: Drive and boat to Amazonia Lodge

Today if we need to explore the forest for some missing species we can do and after lunch we will drive to atalaya village and short boat to Amazonia Logde. There are hummingbird feeders to enjoin for the rest of the afternoon. We will do some owling before or after dinner. Night in Amazonia Lodge.

  • DAY 13: Boat birding trip 

Early birding, breakfast and well start our boat trip for 5 hours down stream to get our last birding lodge in Manu.  Today will be an exelent chances for several species along the river bank where we can stop for a better view and even get some photos. Our boat is with roof and very comfortable with fron seats. Night in Manu Wildlife Center 

  • DAY 14: Full Day Birding

Early birding on the way to the biggest Macaw Clay lick in Manu then some trails and canopy tower for some extra species in the afternoon. We will try to do some owling before dinner. Night in Manu Wildlife Center 

  • DAY 15: Oxbow Lake - Puerto Maldonado

Early visit to Blanco oxbow lake where we will navigate on catamaran for several species and then well do our boat ride down stream to reach Colorado village with a lot of chances for raptors, swallows, kingfishers among other specialities found along the river sides. In colorado will ge a private taxi for one hour to San Carlos village, where we will cross Inambari River by boat and finally will take a new private taxi to Puerto Maldonado. Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

  • DAY 16: Birding and flight to Lima

Well have a chance for birding in the morning outside town for some extra species and after well get our last lunch togheter to celebrate our succesfully birding time in Peru. Afernoon transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima.
