Machu Picchu, Manu 19 Days

We updated this tour for 2018 and for the next tours including Vilcabamba Valley for some extra species and Andean Condor. Enjoin with us Peru for only 19 days.

The Tour starts birding part of the Western Pacific Ocean in Lima. Then 50 minutes flight to Cusco for Andean Condor, Machu Picchu, Abra Malaga, Carrizales for several endemics species only found along there.

Finally the most popular birding area; Manu Road ending in alto Madre de Dios River which is part of the Amazon basin with the extension to enjoy Manu Lowland for more amazonian species arriving in Puerto Maldonado city.

We are sure that you will amaze the great diversity of habitat, flora, fauna, culture and Peruvian food where the trip goes.

  • DAY 1: Arrive in Lima - Peru

We will pick you up from Lima airport and transfer to our hotel. Usually, international flights arrive in Peru from 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm. But remind us about your arrival time. Night in Hotel.

  • DAY 2: Villa Marshes/Pucusana

We will have a morning drive to Villa Marshes (Pantanos de Villa) for several species found here. Then we will drive again to get Pucusana fishing town for our semi-pelagic trip for Inca Terns and Penguins. Then if time permits we can explore Puerto Viejo, San Andres area for some extra species. And finally, we will back to our hotel in Lima.

Target Species: Many-Colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like HoteRushbird, Great Grebe, Yellow-Hooded Blackbird, Inca Tern, Peruvian Booby, Blue-footed Booby, Peruvian Pelican, Humboldt Penguin, Guanay and Red-legged Cormorants, Blackish Oystercatcher, Surf Cinclodes (E), Coastal Miner (E), Amazilia Hummingbird, Peruvian Meadowlark, Peruvian Thick-knee, Purple-collared Woodstar, Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Pacific Parrotlet and many others.

  • DAY 3: Morning flight to Cusco and Lakes

We will flight to Cusco. There we will visit some Andean lakes: Huacarpay, Huaypo and Piuray Lakes. After all day birding, we will drive to Limatambo. Dinner and night in Limatambo Hotel.

  • DAY 4: Mollepata Road for endemics

Early start drives up to Mollepata road where we can enjoin our new birding spot for several species very restricted to the area and with good luck Andean Condor. After this amazing area, we will drive to Cusco. Dinner and Night in Cusco Hotel

Target Species: White-eared Puffbird, Pale-tailed Canastero, White-tufted Sunbean (E), Vilcabamba Thisleatail (E), Apurimac Brush-finch (E), Stripe-headed Antpitta, Vilcabamba Tapaculo (E), Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch (E), Creamy-crested Spinetail (E), Giant Conebill, Andean Condor, Tit Like Dacnis and Many others.

  • DAY 5: Abra Malaga - Peñas

Early breakfast and we will drive up to Abra Malaga Pass (polylepis forest) at 4300 m where there is a chance to explore the small polylepis forest a very unique ecosystem for certain species only found along the area. We will have a full morning and part of the afternoon to search all endemics and specialist. Then we will back to our hotel for dinner. Night in Ollantaytambo Hotel.

Target Species: White-winged Diuca-Finch, Ash-breasted Sierra-Finch, Plumbeous Sierra-Finch, White-browed Tit-Spinetail, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Royal Cinclodes, White.winged Cinclodes, Puna Tapaculo, Olivaceous Thornbill, Andean Lapwing, Giant Conebill, Puna Ground-Tyrant, and many others.

  • DAY 6: Carrizales full Day

Early start drives to Carrizales Birding Spot for several endemics species ending at Ipal Ecolodge our new birding spot or lunch and some birding for target species. Then we will back for our dinner. Night in Ollantaytambo hotel.

Target Species: Unstreaked Tit-tyrant, Cusco Brush-finch, Parodis Heminpingus, Black-capped Hemispingus, Rufous Antpitta, Trilling Tapaculo, Marcapata Spinetail, Inca Wren, White-banded Tyrannulet, Pearled Treerunner, Streaked Tuftedcheek, White-rumped Hawk,  Plushcap, Red-crested Finch, Sclaters Tyrannulet, Ocellated Piculet, Plumbeous-back Tyrant, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Yellow-bellied Seedeater, Common Tody-Flycatcher among others.

  • DAY 7: Machu Picchu time!

An early train ride to Aguas Calientes to visit the Machu Picchu where we will have an unforgettable experience along Inca site for the rest of the morning. Then we can do some birding before and after our lunch. Them late afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo. Night in Hotel.

Target Species: Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Inca Wren (E), Green and White Hummingbird (E), Ocellated Piculet, Masked Fruiteater (E), Chestnut-capped Brush-Finch, Pale-legged Warbler, Rusty Flowerpiercer, Tricolored Brush-Finch, Variable Antshrike, and many others.

  • DAY 8: Manu Road time!

Early breakfast and then we will drive up to San Salvador Lake (4,100m) on the way to Paucartambo village. Then we will arrive at Acjanaco pass where Manu National Park starts. After the pass, we will probably start to see more species. Night in Wayqecha Station.

Target Species: Bearded Mountanier (E), Giant Hummingbird, Chestnut-Breasted Mountain-Finch (E), Giant Coot, Crested Duck, Andean Goose, Plumbeous Sierra-Finch, Ash-breasted Sierra-Finch, Andean Flicker, Puna Ibis, Hooded Siskin, Black Siskin, Band-tailed Seedeater, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Slender-billed Miner, Creamy-crested Spinetail (E), Brow-Backed Chat-tyrant, Black-throated, Moustached, Masked Flowerpiercers, Tit-like Dacnis, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager and many others.

  • DAY 9: Full day Birding

Today will be full day birding along the road and lodge surrounding. We will explore the upper road for some missing species and spend more time after the tunnels for more diversity for all our targets. Night in Wayqecha Station.

Target Species: Grass-green Mountain-Tanager, Chestnut-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Barred Becard, Red-crested and Chestnut-crested Cotingas, Slaty-backed Chat-tyrant, Golden-headed Quetzal, Golden-collared Tanager, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Blue-banded Toucanet, Red and White Antpitta (E), Marcapata Spinetail (E) and many others.

  • DAY 10: Birding to Cock of the Rock Lodge

 Early birding along the road on our way to the next birding lodge. Dinner and night in Cock of the Rock Lodge.

Target Species: Gray-mantled Wren, Mountain Foliage-Gleaner, Olive-Backed Woodcreeper, Stripe Threehunter, Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant, Inca Flycatcher(E), Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant, Stripe-Chested Antwren, White-backed Fire-Eye, Black-eared Hemispingus, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Yungas Manakin, Yellow-throated, common Clorospingus, Dusky-Green Oropendola, Brown Tinamou, Rufous-tailed Tyrant, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Unicolored Antshrike, Andean Motmot, Rufescent Screech-Owl, Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Yellow-breasted Antbird, Black-streaked Puffbird and many others.

  • DAY 11: Full Day Birding

We will have full morning birding along Manu road and lodge surroundings and we will have some time to enjoin the hummingbirds feeders. After lunch, we will keep birding for some missing species and we will try to see Lyre-tailed Nightjar display before dusk. Night in Cock of the Rock Lodge.

Target Species: Andean Cock of the Rock, Versicolored Barbet, Beryl-spangled, Safron-Crown, Golden Tanagers and Orange-eared, Yellow-throated, Slaty, Golden-naped, Paradise, Blue-necked, Bay-headed, Spotted Tanagers, Deep-blue Flowerpiercer, Three-stripe Warbler, Russet-crowned Warbler, Black-faced Brush-finch, Golden-headed Quetzal, Crested Quetzal, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Wire-crested Thorntail, Speckled Hummingbird, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Peruvian Piedtail (E), Many-spotted Humminbird, Botted Raquetail and many others.

  • DAY 12: Birding drive to Villa Carmen Station

Early start birding drive to get Villa Carmen Station. After accommodation, we will spend time on the hummingbird feeders and lodge surrounding for some other Amazonian species. Night in Villa Carmen.

Target Species: Gray-mantled Wren, Mountain Foliage-Gleaner, Olive-Backed Woodcreeper, Stripe Threehunter, Scale-crested Pygmy-Tyrant, Inca Flycatcher(E), Marble-faced Bristle-Tyrant, Stripe-Chested Antwren, White-backed Fire-Eye, Black-eared Hemispingus, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Yungas Manakin, Yellow-throated, common Clorospingus, Dusky-Green Oropendola, Brown Tinamou, Rufous-tailed Tyrant, Chestnut-backed Antshrike, Unicolored Antshrike, Andean Motmot, Rufescent Screech-Owl, Blue-naped Chlorophonia, Yellow-breasted Antbird, Black-streaked Puffbird and many others.

  • DAY 13: Full Day Birding 

Early Breakfast and we will search for a Bamboo specialist. After lunch, we will explore other trails to enjoin our amazonian birding. We will do some owling before or after dinner. Night in Villa Carmen

Target Species: Rufous-crested Coquette, Golden-Tailed Sapphire, Blue-tailed Emerald, Blue-headed Parrot, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Manu Antbird, Bamboo Antshrike, White-cheeked Foliage-Gleaner, Cabanis Spinetail, White-cheeked tody-tyrant, White-lined Antbird, White-browed Antbird, Hoatzin, Black-capped Donacobius, Band-tailed Manakin, and many others. 

  • Day 14: Villa Carmen- Manu Wildlife Center

After breakfast, we will get ready for our next destination. It will be 4 hours boat ride down Madre de Dios River with the chance to find several species to spot along the riversides such as Parrots, kingfishers, terns, herons, egrets, collared plover, pied lapwing, and even some monkeys, capybara. We will arrive at the oxbow lake in the afternoon where we will take a catamaran to explore along lakesides. After some hours birding, we will go to our lodge for Dinner and Overnight in Manu Wildlife Center

  • Day 15-16: Full days birding along the trails

We will have a full day birding along the trails for several other species with some owling time. Dinner and Overnight in Manu Wildlife Center.

  • Day 17: Transfer to Puerto Maldonado - Chuncho Lodge

We will early visit an Oxbow lake for Giant otters and after we will have our boat trip for about 3 hours with some birding along the river for Capped Heron, Orinoco Goose, Sand-colored Nighthawk and perhaps Jaguar on the way!!! As soon we arrive at the Colorado village, we will continue our trip to Puerto Maldonado by private taxi for 1 hour and then we will cross the Inambari River with a local boat and finally we will take a private taxi for one more hour to get the entrance to our last lodge located in Tambopata Reserve. There we will visit the canopy tower for some extra species. We will do some owling before dinner: Night in Chuncho Lodge.

  • Day 18: Biggest Macaw Clay Lick in the world

We will start early morning visiting the most amazing place for Macaws, Parrots, Parakeets which they meet every morning at the popular place clay lick a river cliff where they can find minerals to lick. Then we will back to our lodge for lunch. After lunch, we will explore some of the trails. Dinner and night in Chuncho Lodge.

  • Day 19: Canopy Tower and birding drive to Puerto Maldonado

We will visit the canopy tower for more extra species and after we will go to Puerto Maldonado where we will search for some extra species. We will have our last lunch to celebrate our amazing time birding with PBT. Late afternoon flight to Lima.

  • Lena and I want to thank you again for a wonderful trip. It is hard to believe it is over. We appreciated your great bird-finding skills, the design of the trip and your taking care of us so well.   • Omar really took care of us from picking us up at the airport to getting us back there, 21 tour days, one in country fight day to Cusco, 1 National Strike day off , 1Partial Rain Day...whew, yet 656 BIRDS in that time frame (21 Days). I am still exhausted...
