Northern Peru birding for Tumbes, Marañon, Abra Patricia, San Martin Species for less than two weeks

Peruvian Plantcutter a very rare and restricted species found at tumbesian region with several other species found only along this habitat. Then Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis) frequenting at Huembo Center at Amazonas Region. And Abra Patricia area for: Royal Sunangel, Ecuadorian Piedtail, Speckle-breasted Piculet, Equatorial Graytail, Ochre-fronted, Rusty-breasted, Chestnut, and Rusty-tinged Antpittas, Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Johnson’s Tody-Flycatcher, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, and Cinnamon Screech-Owl. We even have an excellent chance of hearing, and a reasonable chance of seeing, the bizarre Long-whiskered Owlet.

Tarapoto and Moyobamba that have an array of additional species, some of which are especially interesting, like the recently described Mishana Tyrannulet, the huallagae form of Maranon Slaty-Antshrike, the recently-described Painted Manakin (part of the Striped Manakin complex), the scarce Blackish Pewee, Plumbeous Euphonia, Dotted Tanager, Golden-headed Manakin, Rufous-crested Coquette and many others for sure.

  • DAY 1: Arrive to Lima

We will pick you up from lima airpot and transfer to our hotel. Usually international flights arrive to Peru from 10:30 pm to 11:30 pm. But remind us about your arrival time. Night in Hotel.

  • Day 2: Flight to Chiclayo and Birding

We will have a morning flight to Chiclayo to start our northern peru birding along the tumbessian, marañon and amazonas birding areas in one trip. There we will meet our driver for the whole trip. And we will search first for Peruvian Plantcutter and other species found along the carob forest. After lunch we will explore a wetland for some extra species by eten marsh. Then we will drive to Pomac Reserve. Night in Ecolodge

  • Day 3: Full day birding

After breakfast we will drive up to batan grande and pomac reserve for some mising species on our way to Olmos town. Night in Hotel

  • Day 4: Full Day Birding Quebrada Limon 

After breakfast we will drive to qebrada limon for target Sspecies for full day. Night in Olmos

Target Species: Henna-hooded and Rufous-necked Foliage-Gleaners, Ecuadorian Piculet, Ecuadorian Trogon, Purple-collared Woodstar, Tumbes Hummingbird, White-winged Guan, Cinereous Finch, Tumbes Tyrant (ENDEMIC),Tumbes Sparrow, Sulphur-throated Finch, Gray-breasted Flycatcher (ENDEMIC), Gray and Gold Warbler, Sooty-capped Flycatcher, Gray and White Tyrannulet, Pacific Elaenia

  • Day 5: Birding Abra Porculla - Jaen

Early birding up the mountain of Abra Porculla at 2,150 meters for some our target species if we have not seen before. We will try to spend all morning birding along the area. Then we will keep driving with some birding on our way to Jaen Town. Dinner and night in Hotel.

Target Species: Piura Chat-tyrant, Chapmans Antsrike, Ecuatorian Trogon, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Ecuadorian Piculet, White-headed Brush-Finch, Grey-browed Brush-finch, Bay-crowned Brush-finch, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Line-cheeked Spinetail, Gray-chinned Hermit, Black-cowled Saltator, Elegant Crescentchest, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Three-banded Warbler, Spot-throated Hummingbird, Smoky-brown Woodpecker, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-tyrant, Speakled-breasted Wren, White-edged Oriole, Silvery Tanager, Fawm-breasted Tanager, Blue Seedeater, Black-crested Warbler, Pacific Elaenia, Black-capped Sparrow, Yellow-tailed Oriole, Black-crested Tit-tyrant, Rufous-chested Tanager, Rufous-winged Tyrannulet, Chivi Vireo, Golden Grosbeak, Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant, Gray-breasted Flycatcher and many others.

  •  Day 6: Jaen Forest, Pomacochas

We will start early exploring patch of forest for our main target species moving from one locacion to other to encrease our birding spots. After lunch we will look for some missing species on our way to Pomacochas. Night in Pomacochas Hotel

Target Species: Northern Slaty Antshrike, Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher, Marañon Crescentchest, Little Inca-Finch, Red-crested Finch, Tataupa Tinamou, Ecuadorian Groun-dove, Blue Ground-dove, Yellow-throated Toucan, Green-Backed Becard, Black and white Becard, Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Purple-throated Euphonia, Drab Seedeater, Dull-colored Grassquit, Peruvian Pigeon, Yellow-bellied Elaenia, Comb Duck, Pale-legged Hornero, Brown-crested Flycatcher, Buff-bellied Tanager, Plain-breasted Ground-dove, Andean Emerald, Marvelous Spatuletail, Purple-throated Sunangel, Andean Emeral, Litlle Woodstart, White-bellied hummingbird, Rainbow Startfronlet, Bronzy Inca, Sickle-winged Guan, Andean Guan, Speckled-chested Piculet, Rufous-capped Antshrike, and many others. 

  • Day 7: San Lorenzo Trail, Huembo

Today we will explore San Lorenzo trail for some endemic and restricted species found at this mountain ridge. This trail start from 2,560 a 2,900 meters. The trail is not very easy but as soon as you find several of the species will be worth it. After lunch we will visit huembo center for Marvelous Spatuletail and before dark pomacochas lake surrounding for some extra species. Night in Pomacochas hotel

Target Species: Russet-mantled Softtail, Northern Rufous-capped Antshrike, Peruvian Wren, Emerald Toucanet, Band-tailed Fruiteater, Barred Fruiteater, Black-throated Tody-tyrant, Spectacled Redstart, Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Blue-and-black Tanager, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Marvelous Spatuletail, Mountain Velvetbreast, Amethyst Woodstar, Variable Antshrike, Red-crested Cotinga, Trilling Tapaculo, Blackish Tapaculo, Plain-tailed Wren, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Rufous Spinetail, Pale-Billed Antpitta, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Golden-plumed Parakeet. 

  • DAY 8,9: Birding Abra Patricia Mountains, Afluente, Alto Nieva

After breakfast we will drive to Abra Patricia area searching for mixex flocks. There is a trail to explore for some missing species and canopy tower to explore in the morning or afternoon. We will visit also fundo alto Nieva and afluente hot spot for Antpittas feeders and other species only found there. We will try during the nights for some owls, but specially Long-whiskered Owlet.  Nights in Owlet Lodge

  • DAY 10: Tinamous feeders, Moyobamna

Early Birding for some missing species and then we will drive down to Aguas verdes for Tinamous and Hummingbird feeders at Arena Blanca Reserve. Then we will head to moyobamba and visit the hummingbird place for extra species. The if we still have energy we will do some owling after dinner. Night in Waqanki Lodge.

  • Day 11: Birding, Tarapoto

Morning birding Morro de Calzada reserve and other birding spots . Then we will start our drive to Tarapoto. There are several stops along the road. Night in Tarapoto hotel.

  • Day 12: The tunnel, Koepecks Hermit Station

Early drive up to the tunnel for Dooted Tanager, Plumbeous Euphonia, Masked Tanager, Golden-collared Toucanet, Cliff Flycatcher and several other found along the reserve. Then we will visit the feeders for the Endemic Koepecks Hermit. There is a chance to get also Golden-headed Manakin lek near the station with some luck White-plumed Antbird, Long-tailed and Great Potoo roosting. We will have lunch there at the reserve and some extra birding along the trails and the road on our way to tarapoto. Dinner and night in Tarapoto Hotel

  • Day 13: Cordillera Escalera - Flight to Lima

We will bird early morning the reserve for some missing species and search other hot spot for extra species. Then we will have our last lunch togheter and transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima and connections to Home.

NOTE: If you still have more time you can extend your trip for more birds before your flight to Home:

1. The endangered Scarlet-Banded Barbet (endemic) at plataforma for extra 4 days with several other species only found there starting from Tarapoto and back Tarapoto.

2. For White-masked Antbirt (endemic) at San Lorenzo for 4 days including a short plane trip to get and back the area and many other resident species.
