Owlet and Marvelous

Marvelous Spatuletail tour for less than two weeks including, Tarapoto area (Cordillera Escalera Reserve, Koepecks Hermit Station, Moyobamba Valley, Aguas Verdes (Arena Blanca Reserve), Afluente, Fundo Alto Nieva, Abra Patricia (Owlet Lodge), Pomacochas (Huembo Center).

Marvelous Spatuletail (Loddigesia mirabilis), the most outlandishly ornamented of hummingbirds frequenting at Huembo Center, an adult male Loddigesia is truly a wonder. We will target during our days: Royal Sunangel, Ecuadorian Piedtail, Speckle-breasted Piculet, Equatorial Graytail, Ochre-fronted, Rusty-breasted, Chestnut, and Rusty-tinged Antpittas, Bar-winged Wood-Wren, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Johnson’s Tody-Flycatcher, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, and Cinnamon Screech-Owl. We even have an excellent chance of hearing, and a reasonable chance of seeing, the bizarre Long-whiskered Owlet.

Tarapoto and Moyobamba that have an array of additional species, some of which are especially interesting, like the recently described Mishana Tyrannulet, the huallagae form of Marañon Slaty-Antshrike, the recently-described Painted Manakin (part of the Striped Manakin complex), the scarce Blackish Pewee, Plumbeous Euphonia, Dotted Tanager, Golden-headed Manakin, Rufous-crested Coquette and many others for sure.

  • DAY 1: Arrive to Lima

Welcome to Lima and you will transfer to our hotel selected, night in Hotel

  • DAY 2: Morning Flight to Tarapoto  - Moyobamba

We will pick you up from your hotel in lima for our flight to Tarapoto. As soon as we get there we will be welcome for our drive to start our drive to Moyobamba and enjoin the hummingbirds feeders at Waqanki Lodge. We will try for some owls before or after Dinner. Night in Waqanki Lodge or Hotel in town

  • DAY 3: Calzada Reserve and surroundings

After breakfast we will explore Morro de Calzada Reserve and spend some time birding along the dry forest and hummingbirds feeders. After lunch we will explore other birding sites. . We will do some owling before dinner or after. Nights in Waqanki Lodge or Hotel in Town

  • Day 4:  Morning birding - Huembo

Early birding the mountains for extra endemics and restrcited species and after we will up to abra patricia mountains where there are several stops for mixed flocks and some other birding spots. We will arrive late afternoon to Pomacochas town. Night in Pomacochas Hotel

  • Day 5: Birding Pale-billed Antpitta - Huembo Center

There is a chance for: Pale-billed Antpitta (endemic)at an Lorenzo area. The fisrt part is by vehicle all the way to San Lorenzo village, then we need to walk the uphill for aorund 30 minutes or a bit more for: Chestnut-crowned Cotinga, White-capped Tanager, Rusty-tinged Antpitta, peruvian Wren and Russet-mantled Softtail. We will back for lunch and after huembo center for Marvelous Spatuletail and other hummers. Dinner and night in Pomacochas Hotel

  • Day 6: Abra Patricia and Owlet Lodge

Early biring surrounding Pomacochas aera and then if we need to visit again Huembo center for Marvelous Spatuletail and other species we will do it. Then we will start our birding time along the road to Abra Patricia mountains, afluente area. Then we will arrive to Alto nieva Reserve wehere we will try for Long-whiskered Owlet and other species. Night in Owlet lodge.

  • Day 7-8: Full Days Birding

We will have two full days birding along the canopy tower, trails, lodge surroundings and along abra patricia valley doing some stop at Afluente, Alto Nieva feeders for extra species. We will try for the Owlet and other species before dinner.  Nights in Owlet Lodge.

  • Day 9: Birding, Tarapoto

Morning birding the hill forest behind the lodge. And After Lunch we will start our drive to Tarapoto. There are several stops along the road. After Lunch we will seacrh for centain species outside town. Night in Tarapoto hotel.

  • Day 10: The tunnel, Koepecks Hermit Station - Lima

Early drive up to the tunnel for Dooted Tanager, Plumbeous Euphonia, Masked Tanager, Golden-collared Toucanet, Cliff Flycatcher and several other found along the reserve. Then we will visit the feeders for the Endemic Koepecks Hermit. There is a chance to get also Golden-headed Manakin lek near the station with some luck White-plumed Antbird, Long-tailed and Great Potoo roosting. Then we will be transfer to tarapoto airport for hour evening flight to Lima.


NOTE: If you still have more time you can extend your trip for more birds before your flight to Home:

1. The endangered Scarlet-Banded Barbet (endemic) at plataforma for extra 4 days with several other species only found there starting from Tarapoto and back Tarapoto.

2. For White-masked Antbirt (endemic) at San Lorenzo for 4 days including a short plane trip to get and back the area and many other resident species.
