Tambopata Reserve Birding

Peru Birding Tours invite to join us for birding along the most diversity rainforest located at southeast of Peru.

This tour is mainly for amazonian species staying at some of the lodges to provide the best birding time in the south Amazon for: Tinamous, parrots, macaws, parakeets, toucans, manakins, trogons, motmots, antbirds, antwrens, antthrush, foliage-gleaners, woodcreepers, woodpeckers, tanagers and Euphonias just to mention some families.

This tour provide you a chance to explore several habitat: Primary and second ground forest, oxbow lakes, canopy tower, rivers, streams, bamboo forest, floodplain forest, parrot clay licks to enhance your lifelist.

We are very sure that you will see more than 350 species and get amazing photos in this trip.


  • Day 1: Arrive to Puerto Maldonado - Lake Sandoval

Airlines usually arrive from midday from Lima or Cusco but try to book the earliest one to arrive. We will welcome to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to our river port for our boat trip for only 30 minutes to get Sandoval Lake entrance where we need to register. There we will start birding along the trail on the way to get our lodge. Dinner and Night in Sandoval Lodge.

  • Day 2: Full day Birding

Early breakfast and we will search by a catamaran along the lake for resident species and with a good luck a family of Giant Otters, Black Caimans, Agami Heron. After nice early morning we will back to our lodge for breakfast and after we will keep birding along the trails. After lunch we will walk along the trails for more amazonian species and late afternoon we will take the catamaran again for some species missing if we need to do it again fi not wr will keep birding along the trails. Dinner and Night in Sandoval Lodge.

  • DAY 3: Sandoval – Explorers Inn Lodge

Today we will do some birding on our way out to Puerto Maldonado again.  Then we will start our boat trip upstream along Tambopata river. We will navigate for 3 hours around up stream searching for some river birds. If there is time we will do some birding at the lodge surroundings. Night in Explorers inn Lodge.

Birds: Ringed, Amazon, Green kingfishers, Drab Water-Tyrant, Capped Heron, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Sand-colored nighthawk, Cocoi Heron, Horned Screamer, Great-black Hawk, White-winged Swallow, White-banded Swallow and many others.

  • DAY 4: Canopy Tower and Explores Inn Trails.

Early Breakfast and bird the canopy tower for specialist. After Lunch we will explore floodplain forest for extra species and some owling before or after dinner. Night in Explorers inn Lodge.

Birds: Purple-throated Fruitcrow, Bare-necked Fruitcrow, Golden-Collared Toucanet, Emeral Toucanet, Curl-crested Aracari, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Ivory-billed Aracari, Blue-headed Macaw, Red and Green Macaw, Scarlet Macaw among others.

  • DAY 5: Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake – Explores Inn Trails.

Early start with a boat ride for 15 minutes and walk 1 kilometer to reach the lake, there we will board a catamaran for birding surround the lake for some of the unique species there and with a good luck a family of giant river otters. After Lunch we will do some birding along the trails. Dinner and Night in Explorers inn Lodge.

  • DAY 6: Parrot Clay Lick, trails - Canopy Tower

Morning visit the amazing meeting place of parrots, parakeets and some macaw species, then we will spend birding along the trails for the rest of the morning. After lunch we will go to the tower. Dinner and Night in Explorers inn Lodge.

  • DAY 7: Bamboo Stand – Explores Inn Trails.

Early morning birding along the bamboo forest for specialist. Then lunch and afternoon birding with some owling before dinner. Night in Explorers inn Lodge. 

  • DAY 8: Transfer to Puerto Maldonado -  Amigos research center

Breakfast and transfer out to Laberinto village and boat ride on the Madre Dios river to get our last birding spot. We will try to do some owling before dinner. Nigh in the center

  • DAY 9 – 10: Full Days Birding

We will have two full days to explore several of the trail for some missing species. We will do some owling before dinner. Nights in the Center.

  • DAY 11: Transfer out to Puerto Maldonado – Lima

Breakfast and we will back to Puerto Maldonado airport for your flight to Lima and connections.

    Im a pretty good birder, but Omar Diaz spotted at least 200 species that I probably would have overlooked! He knows his birds by sight and sound and is very passionate about his chosen profession.
