Tumbes,Marañon, Abra Patricia

We designed our new extended northern birding tour for the most diversity of habitat and species found along tumbessian, marañon regions with the amazing time also along, pomacochas, huembo center, abra patricia, fundo alto nieva, afluente, morro de calzada, waqanki and cordillera escalera reserve (the tunnel).



  • DAY 1: Lomas de Lachay

Morning drive for this amazing reserve for some endemic species only found in this particular natural habitat and then will explore Paraiso lagoon for some shore birds and marsh species. Dinner in our hotel and overnight in Lima

  • DAY 2: Santa Eulalia Birding

We will explore lima andes where we can find andean condor, great inca-finch and other several endemic species located in this valley. We will back to our hotel late afternoon for dinner and overnight in Lima

  • DAY 3: Flight to Chiclayo -Chaparri Reserve

We will flight to Chiclayo and transfer to Tinajones water reserve for several species and then we will head into chaparri ecolodge for the end of the afternoon. We will try to find Peruvian screech-owl, dinner and overnight in Chaparri

  • DAY 4: Casupe Mountains

Early drive up to Casupe mountains to get in time for the best birding acitvity. After some hours birding around this big reserve we will head back to Chaparri reserve and birding for the afternon. Dinner and overnight in Chaparri

  • DAY 5: Pomac Reserve

Early drive to Pomac reserve and spend mostly of the morning birding along this amazing reserve. Then we will drive to Chiclayo for dinner and overnight in hotel

  • DAY 6: Birding drive to Cajamarca

Early start for briding drvie on the way Cajamrca city. Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

  • DAY 7: San Marcos, rio chonta

Early birding and explore for several endemics species. dinner and overnight in cajamarca

  • DAY 8: Birding drvive to Celendin

Early birding through the humid forest and Polylepis scrub where we will search for Andean species. We will arrive late afternoon, dinner and overnight in Hotel

Birds: Peruvian Sierra Finch, Shining Sunbeam, Black-crested Warbler,  Black-crested Tit-Tyrant and Many-striped Canastero amon many others. 

  • DAY 9: Birding to Leymebamba

Early birding and search along bombax woodlands, Abra Barra Negro pass and also riverine, agricultural vegetation and Cactus-covered Slopes. We will arrive late afternoon for dinner and overnight in Hotel

Birds: Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Chestnut-backed Thornbird and Grey-winged Inca Finch, Jelski’s Chat-Tyrant, Buff-bridled Inca Finch among many others.

  • DAY 10: Abra Negro and Rio Atuen

We will explore again Abra Barra Negro for some missing species and back to our hotel for dinner and overnight in leymebamba

Birds: Coppery Metaltail, Russet-mantled Softtail, White-chinned Thistletail, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, obscura race of Rufous Antpitta, Large-footed Tapaculo, Shining Sunbeam, Collared Inca, Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan, Northern Mountain Cacique, Purple-backed Thornbill, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, local race of Rusty-breasted Antpitta, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Andean Pygmy Owl, Rufous-banded Owl. 

  • DAY 11: Birding drive to Chapapoyas

Early mornign start to get several marañon species. Dinner and overnight in Chachapoyas hotel.

  • DAY 12: Kuelap Fortaleza - JAEN

We will visit pre-Incan Fortress of Kuelap occupying an area greater than Macchu Picchu. Afternoon drive to Jaen, dinner and overnight in hotel.

Birds: Rainbow Starfrontlet, Little Woodstar, Baron’s Spinetail, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Superciliated Hemispingus. 

  • DAY 13: Full day birding

Today we head to Tamborapa and other sites our target species. Dinner and overnight in Hotel in Jaen

Birds: Little Inca Finch, Spot-throated Hummingbird, Maranon Thrush, Buff-bellied Tanager, Marañon Crescentchest ,  Green-backe, Black-and-white Becard, Sooty-crowned Flycatcher.

  • DAY 14: Drive to Utcuamba Valley - Huembo center

Early start birding ouside Jaen for some missing species and get the place for Marvelous Spatuletail and several other species foudn here. Dinner and overnight in Pomacochas Hotel.

  • DAY 15: Pale-billed Antpitta trail - Owlet Lodge

This morning, there is a chance to explore san lorenzo trail for some very rare species and only found there. After lunch we will go to Owlet lodge. Dinner and overnight.

  • DAYS 16 -17: Full days birding Abra Patricia

Full days birding along Abra patricia, afluente, alto nieva. We will have two nights for the Long-whiskered Owlet and other species. Overnight in Owlet Lodge

  • DAY 18: Birding drive to Moyobamba(waqanki lodge)

 We will visit Arena Blanca reserve for the hummingbird and tinamus feeders. After lunch we will drive to Moyobamba. We will try for some owls before or after Dinner. Overnight in Waqanki Lodge.

  • DAY 19: Ashy-throated Antwren

We will have full day for birding up the mountains for several species and afternoon morro de calzada reserve and surroundings. Dinner and overnight in Waqanki lodge

  • DAY 20: Drive to Tarapoto

Early birding calzada reserve and the feeders at the lodge. After lunch we will start our drive to tarapoto city. There is a place on the way where we will stop for Oilbird and other target species. Dinner and Overnight in Hotel

  • DAY 21: The tunnel/koepecks hermit station -  flight to Lima

Morning birding the popular cordillera scalera (the tunnel) and the hummingbird station. There is a trail at this station to explore where we found some manakins species leek, long-taled Potoo rost and many others.

We will back to Tarapoto for our evening flight to Lima or you join any extention!

    Im a pretty good birder, but Omar Diaz spotted at least 200 species that I probably would have overlooked! He knows his birds by sight and sound and is very passionate about his chosen profession.
