Peru Northen Endemics Extended
Day 1: Arrive in Lima
Arrive to Lima and you will be welcome at the airport and transfer you to our hotel selected. But if you arrive in time to get a domestic flight connection to Tarapoto will be great. Night in Lima or Tarapoto
Day 2: Birding up to Plataforma - Scarlet Banded barbet!
Morning flight to Tarapoto or early drive up to Plataforma place, the road condition is really good after their maintenance a few years ago, the road was very difficult and took almost one day to reach the place. But in the last years taken only 2 or 4 hours to get to the place. We will do selected stops for certain species or any sightings along the road. After lunch, we will try to find some of the endemics Scarlet-banded Barbet (E) or Cordillera Azul Antbird (E) and several other species and if the climate is good we will search for nocturnal birds. Night in Capito Family House.
Day 3: Full-day search for target species
We will have two days to search for the Scarlet-banded Barbet or Cordillera Azul Antbird and several other species such as Gray-tailed Piha, Jet Manakin, Blue-rumped Manakin, Scaled and Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater, White-fronted Nunbird, Strong-billed Woodcreeper and several mixed flocks found along this unique birding site and after happily sights the main target birds. After Lunch, we will see if we need to scan for one of the missing species. Night in Capito Family House
Day 4: Birding up back to Tarapoto
Morning birding for some missing species and then we will start our back to Bellavista town and then Tarapoto. Dinner and Night in Tarapoto
Day 5: Birding Cordillera Escalera - Tunnel - Aconabikh
Morning flight to Tarapoto and drive for about 30 minutes up to 800 mt to reach the first birding spot which is the area for White-throated, Yellow-tufted Woodpeckers, Dotted Tanager, Dotted, Yellow-bellied, Paradise, Bay-headed, Swallow, Yellow-crested, Magpie, Olive, Blue-grey, Silvery Tanagers, Blackish Pewee, Rough-legged Tyrannulet, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Cliff Flycatcher, Flavescent Flycatcher, Streaked Flycatcher, Curl-crested, Chestnut-eared, Ivory-billed Aracaris, Pink-throated Brilliant, Plumbeous Euphonia, Purple-throated Euphonia, Gilded Barbet, Black-faced, Blue Dacnis, Green, Purple Honeycreepers just to mention some of them. Then we will head to our next birding spot Koepecks Hermit (Aconabikh) which is a great place for Golden-headed, Blue-crowned, Blue-backed, Fiery-capped Manakins, Black-faced Antthrush, Black-faced Antbird, White-flanked Antwren, Pygmy Antwren, Golden-collared Woodpecker, Spixs Guan, Golden-collared Toucanet and with luck Hairy-crested Antbird, and White-plumed Antbird. By the feeders Koepckes Hermit, Goulds Jewelfront, Black-throated Mango, White-necked Jacobin. Afternoon birding for some missing species. Night in Tarapoto
Day 6: Birding to Moyobamba
Morning birding and head to Moyobamba with a stop for Oilbird roosting area. Then we will visit Morro de Calzada Reserve where hold several species such us Blue-crowned, Violaceus, White-tailed Trogons, Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Gilded Barbet, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Short-crested Flycatcher, Mishana Tyrannulet (E), Painted Manakin (E), Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, Western Striolated Puffbird, Pearly-vented, and Stripe-necked Tody-tyrants, Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, Red-shouldered Tanager, Paradise, Blued-necked Tanagers, Black-bellied Tanager (E), Lafresnayes Piculet and many more. Then we will explore a small pond for Masked Duck as the unique spot available to find in Northern Peru. In the afternoon we will bird some of the trails for Ash-throated Antwren (E), Ornate Antwren, Black-and-white Tody-Flycatcher, Fiery-throated Fruiteater, Fiery-capped Manakin. Late afternoon we will try to find Band-bellied, Black-banded, Stripe Owls, and Tropical Screech-Owl. Night in Moyobamba
Day 7. Birding Morro de Calzada & Tinga Reserve
Morning birding along some of the trails, Morro de calzada, Hummningbirds Feeders and then the Tingana Reserve for more species. We will try for some owls before dinner. Night in Moyobamba
Day 8: Birding, afluente, alto Mayo, Abra Patricia
Morning birding for some missing species. Then we will head up to Alto Mayo Reserve with a stop at Afluente spot where usually we find mixed flocks and at the place Llanteria for the Hummingbird Feeders for Ecuadorian Piedtail, Napo Sabrewing, Green Hermit, Fork-tailed Woodnymph. Then we will visit Fundo Alto Nieva Station for other feeders for Greenish Puggleg, Royal Sunangel, Long-tailed Sylph, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, and Peruvian Ratquet-Tail. Depending on our arrival we will watch the hummingbird feeders and lodge surroundings. If time permits we will search for White-throated Screech-Owl no far from the lodge. We can try for the restricted Long-whiskered Owlet. Night in Abra Patricia
Day 9-10: Full days birding along Abra Patricia Forest
We will spend time searching for mixed flock species including Grass-green Tanager, Yellow-scarfed Tanager (E), Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Russet-crowned Warbler, Inca Flycatcher (E), Green and Black Fruiteater, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, Blue and Black Tanager, Spectacled Redstar and many more. Then We will explore the lower part of the Main road Golden-naped Tanager, Huallaga Tanager, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Ash-throated Antwren (E), Russet Antshrike, Lined Antshrike, Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner, Spotted Barbtail, Ash-browed Spinetail, Ornate Flycatcher, Sepia-capped Flycatcher, Marble-faced Bristle-tyrant, Peruvian Tyrannulet, Olivaceous Greenlet, Blackish Antbird, Lanceolated Monklet, Andean Cock-of-the Rock, Scaled Fruiteater and many other species. If the weather is good we will try to find such as White-throated and cinnamon screech owls and the restricted and endemic Long-whiskered Owlet. Nights in Abra Patricia
Day 11: San Lorenzo Trail for Pale-billed Antpitta
Today we will start early drive up to the only available spot for the restricted, endangered, and endemic Pale-billed Antpitta with good luck we can watch it! The trail is a bit challenging for the long distance about 3 km uphill to get to the spot, but we find also along the trail some other species such as Lacrimose, Blue-winged, Chestnut-bellied, Hooded Mountain-Tanagers, Peruvian Wren (E), Russet-mantled Softtail (E), Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Blue-and-black Tanager, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Mountain Velvetbreast, Red-crested Cotinga, Plain-tailed Wren, Golden-plumed Parakeet some times flying around. After a full day birding along San lorenzo mountain ridge we will head to Jaen. Night in Jaen
Day 12: Birding and head to Gocta
Early birding dry forest or Little Inca-finch endemic of the area, Northern-Slaty Antshrike (NE), Red-crested Finch, Tataupa Tinamou, Chinchipe Spinetail, Golden Grosbeak, Spot- throated Hummingbird, Marañon Crescentchest (E) Red-necked, Blue and gray, Palm Tanagers, White-bellied, Drab Seedeater and many others. Then we will start of birding drive to Cocachimba near the popular Gocta Falls in Amazonas region. If we hear any owls nearby we will try o find it before dinner. Night in Gocta
Day 13: Birding - Drive to Leymebamba
Early birding for some species such as Golden-rumped Euphonia, Speckled-chested Piculet, Buff-bellied Tanager, Marañon Thrush and then we wull visit Marvelous Sapatuletail garden. After amaing morning we will drive to Pedro Ruiz for Peruvian Pigeon and drive to Leymebamba and enjoin the Hummingbird feeders where usually we find Purple-throated Sunangel, Chesnut-breasted Coronet, and many others. Night in Leymebamba
Day 14: Full-day birding Atuen Valley / Abra Negro
Early birding the road along the Atuen River which starts at just 10 minutes from Leymebamba. The road is very productive for several cloud forest species. If we have nice weather we will have a chance to find several mixed flocks including Saffron-crowned, Beryl-spangled, blue-necked, Blue and black, Rust and Yellow, White-capped Tanagers, Scarlet-bellied, Blue-winged, Hooded Mountain-Tanagers, Golden-headed and Crested Quetzal, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Tyran Metaltail, Rainbow Startfronlet, Collared Inca, Shining Sunbeam, Speckled Hummingbird, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Barred Becard, Andean Solitaire, Mountain, Strong-billed Woodpecreepers, Brown-backed, Slaty-Backed and Jelskis chat-tyrants, Montane foliage-gleaner and several other species found along the valley and for the rest of the day we will visit the hummingbird feeder and if we are lucky Koepeckes Screech-Owl. Night in Leymebamba.
Day 15: Birding - Drive to Celendin
Early birding for some missing species and then we will head up to Abra Negro forest spot for Shining Sunbeam, Rainbow Starfrontlet, Blackish Tapaculo, Neblina Tapaculo, Ash-coloured Tapaculo, White-chinned Thistletail (E), Sword-billed Hummingbird, Russet-mantled Softtail (E). Then we will keep birding to Balsas which is located on the Marañon River which divides the Amazonas and Cajamarca regions. There we will start to search for Yellow-faced Parrotlet (E), Spot-throated Hummingbird (E), Buff-bellied Tanager (E), Black-necked Woodpecker (E), Rufous-backed Inca-Finch E), Grey-winged Inca-Finch (E), Buff-bridled Inca-Finch (E), Chestnut-backed Thornbird (E). Night in Celendin.
Day 16: Birding - Drive to Cajamarca
Early birding for some missing species then we will drive to Cajamarca with some stops along the road and if time permits we will go for the Restricted & Endemic Gray-bellied Comet with the chance to find several other species along the road by the Chonta River on the way to Molino (Otuzca). Night in Cajamarca
One full day birding San Marcos for Great Spinetail, other birding spots and Abra Gavilan forest for Rufous-backed Inca-Finch (E), Black Metaltail (E), Rusty-crowned Tit-spinetail, Pale-naped Brush-Finch. Night in Cajamarca.
Day 17: Full day Birding for target species
Today we will spend birding at different spots. we will check Cumbemayo for several species of sierra-finch, ground-tyrant, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Bright-rumped Yellow Finch, Green-headed Hillstar, Slender-billed Miner among others. Then Jesus area for the rare and difficult Great Spinetail, and Buff-bridled Inca Finch, Spot-throated Hummingbirds, Black-necked Woodpecker, Maranon Gnatcatcher and some other species. Finally we will move to Fundo el Rejo searching for Andean species such as Peruvian Sierra Finch, Black-crested Warbler, Black-crested Tit-Tyrant and Many-striped Canastero, endangered Cajamarca Antpitta, Line-cheeked Spinetail, Striated Earthcreeper, Utcubamba Tapaculo, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and the rare White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant among others. Day 18: Birding - Drive to Chiclayo
Early drive Chiclayo. We will try to reach the northern coastal area by the Pacific Ocean with a small patch of carob trees for the restricted, endangered, and endemic Peruvian Plantcutter (E), which we usually have seen in prior birding times. But we will see other species such as Peruvian Sheartail, Amazilia Hummingbird, Purple-collared Woodstart, Tumbes Hummingbird, Collared Antshrike, Necklaced Spinetail, Superciliated Wren, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, Grey-and-White Tyrannulet, and several other ones. Then we will explore eten wetland and along the beach for some coastal species. Night in Chaparri Ecolodge
Day 19: Birding to Chaparri and Olmos
Early birding to along the private reserve searching for White-winged Guan (E), Tumbes Tyrant (E), Elegant Crescentchest, White-edge Oriole, White-tailed Jay, white.headed Brush-fin and others, Then we will head to Olmos.
Day 20: Full day birding - Olmos
Today we will explore Quebrada Limon forest for Pacific Elaenia, Tumbes tyrant, Tumbes Sparrow, Tumbes Hummingbird, Bairds Flycatcher, Parrot-billed Seedeater, Chestnut-throated Seedeater, Pacific Parrotlet, Collared Warbling-Finch, Tumbes Tyrannulet, Rufous Flycatcher, White-winged Guan (E), Ecuadorian Piculet, Ecuadorian Trogon, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Ecuadorian Tyrannulet, Pacific Elaenia, and several other species. After a full day of birding we will back to Olmos. Night in Olmos
Day 21: Birding Abra Porculla - Trujillo
Early start our drive to Abra de Limon de Porculla where there is an alternative road to find Piura Chat-Tyrant (E), Ecuadorian Piculet, White-winged Brush-finch, Bay-crowned Brush-finch, Black-Capped Sparrow, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Line-cheeked Spinetail, Gray-Chinned Hermit, Black-cowled Saltator, Chapmans Antshrike and Chestnut-crowned Antpitta usually around, Gray and Gold, Three-banded Warbler and several other species. Then we will head to south of chiclayo an Trujillo. Night in Trujillo
Day 22: Full day birding Cerro campana & Sinsicap - Flight to Lima
Early birding Campana spot for Cactus Canastero, Streaked Tit-Spinetail, and with good luck Great Inca Finch, Then we will continuos our birding up to Sinsicap for Russet-bellied Spinetail, Bronze-tailed Comet, Bay-crowned Brushfinch, Pied-crested Tit-Tyrant, Piura Chat-Tyrant, Unicolored Tapacul among others. Then we will back to Trujillo for late afternoon flight to Lima and connection. End
