Bolivia Birding Apolo, Madidi Park, Masked Antpitta

  • Day 1: Arrive at la Paz International Aiport

Arrive in la Paz, welcome and we will transfer to our Hotel.

  • Day 2: Birding Titicaca Lake edges Charazani

We depart La Paz early this morning for a long and bumpy drive to Charazani in the Apolo Valley. The day is dedicated to travel, but we will make a stop along the shores of Lake Titicaca should produce the sought-after Titicaca Grebe. The surrounding altiplano has Black Siskin, Wren-like Rushbird, Cream winged Cinclodes, Cinereous Conebill, White-winged Black Tyrant, Mourning, Peruvian and Ash-breasted Sierra Finches, Common and Slender-billed Miner, Plain-breasted Earthcreeper, Black-billed Shrike Tyrant, Rufous-naped Ground Tyrant, Giant Coot, Puna Teal, Crested Duck, and Bare-faced Ground Dove, and some other species. Night in Charazani

  • Day 3: Birding drive to the Apolo area

We will complete our drive to Apolo today, passing through some mid-elevation cloud forests that are full of interesting birds. At the higher elevations, we will listen for the ethereal songs of Andean Solitaires, keeping our eyes on the sky for the rare White-throated Hawk and much more likely Andean Condor. As the day progresses we will visit lower stretches of cloud forest with more subtropical, and possibilities here include Many-spotted Hummingbird, Slaty Gnateater, Montane Foliage-gleaner, Upland Antshrike, White-rumped Hawk, and many more. We will arrive at our lodging in the late afternoon. Night in Apolo.

  • Day 4-5: Full days birding Apolo Area

Birding for two full days searching for rare and special birds. If we are very lucky, we will find Palkachupa Cotinga, named according to the local Quechua language (‘palka’ meaning fork and ‘chupa’ meaning tail), the 600 strong population is incredibly isolated and Critically Endangered to boot. Conservation efforts are progressing, but slash and burn clearance for cattle farming. We will also hope to have found our first Inti Tanager, better known before their formal description as the ‘Kill Bill Tanager’, and we will look for many other species in drier, savanna type habitats such as Rufous-crested Coquette, White-eared Puffbird, Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, Black-bellied Antwren, Western Fire-eye, Red-winged Tinamou, Solitary Eagle, Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, Blackand-chestnut Eagle, Green-cheeked Parakeet, Blue-tailed Emerald, Black-throated Toucanet, Red-stained Woodpecker, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Black-faced Tanager, White-bellied Pygmy-Tyrant, Greenish Elaenia, Yellow-olive Flycatcher, Ultramarine Grosbeak, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Amazonian Motmot, Olive-faced Flatbill, Chestnut-vented Conebill and Guira Tanager, Green-capped Tanager. We also dedicate some time to the surrounding patches of Yungas forests where mixed flocks including Yungas Antwren, Bolivian Tapaculo, Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher, Unadorned Flycatcher, Plumbeous Tyrant (split from Andean), Yungas and Round-tailed Manakins, Cabaniss Spinetail, Pavonine Cuckoo, Upland Antshrike, Southern Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Tschudis and Black-banded Woodcreepers, Guira, Yellow-crested, Green-and-gold, Paradise and Fawn-breasted Tanagers. We will do some owling for Spectacled, Striped and Black-banded Owls, Common Potoo, Rufous, and Scissor-tailed Nightjars. Nights in Apolo

  • Day 6: Birding Back to la Paz

Early birding for some missing species and then we will have a long drive back to La Paz. Night in la Paz.

  • Day 7: Flight to Rurrenabaque - Sadiri Lodge

Morning flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque. Thereafter, we depart on a 3-hour drive to Sadiri Lodge, enjoying a plethora of new, lowland species en route. Red-and-green and Chestnut-fronted Macaws are possibilities, as is the prehistoric Hoatzin! Moriche palm groves along the way might get us Point-tailed Palmcreeper and  Sulphury Flycatcher. We expect to arrive at Sadiri Lodge in time for lunch. By now, we will all have deserved a short rest before spending the afternoon birding the grounds and nearby trails in the pristine foothill forest around our lodge. Night birding has incredible potential, with Rufescent Screech, Crested and Band-bellied Owls all possible. Night in Sadiri Lodge

  • Day 8-9: Full days birding at Sadiri Lodge

We will have two full days to search out as many of the tropical foothill speciality birds such as Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo, White Hawk, Subtropical and Amazonian Pygmy Owls, Great-billed Hermit and White-browed Hermits, Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Black-eared Fairy, Amethyst Woodstar, Black-tailed Trogon, Lemon-throated Barbet, Curl-crested Aracari, Bar-breasted Piculet, White-throated Woodpecker, Military Macaw, Bolivian Recurvebill, Rose-fronted Parakeet, Rufous-tailed, Chestnut-winged, and Buff-throated Foliage-gleaners, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, Purple-throated Cotinga, Grey-throated Leaftosser, Tschudis, Elegant and Inambari Woodcreepers, Western Striolated Puffbird, Brownish-headed and Hairy-crested Antbirds, Yungas, Red-billed, and Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulets, Spectacled Bristle-Tyrant, White-crested Spadebill, Dusky-tailed Flatbill, Round-tailed Manakin, Sharpbill, Cinereous Mourner, Chestnut-crowned and Pink-throated Becards, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Cuzco Warbler, Pectoral Sparrow, White-winged Shrike-Tanager, Yellow-crested, Turquoise, Paradise, Green-and-gold, Yellow-bellied, Spotted, Masked and Olive Tanagers, Yellow-shouldered and Rothschilds Grosbeaks.   • Day 10: Birding drive to Trinidad

We will leave Sadiri Lodge in the morning to Trinidad and then a short drive to Beni grassland and wetland habitat where we will see more typical wildfowl such as White-faced Whistling-Duck, Pied Plover, Maguari and Wood Storks, Jabiru, Cocoi Heron, Bare-faced, Plumbeous and Buff-necked Ibis, Black-collared and Great Black Hawks, Campo Flicker, Yellow-headed Caracara, White-headed Marsh Tyrant, and Scarlet-headed Blackbird.   • Day 11: Morning Flight to Riberalta

Morning flight from Trinidad to Riberalta north of Bolivia is all but forgotten, the 20th-century rubber boom long passed. We will check into our hotel and bird the local surroundings time permitting. NIght in Riberalta

  • Day 12-13: Full days of birding at Riberalta

We have two full days to bird the surroundings of Riberalta. Our primary target is the rarely-seen Masked Antpitta. Poorly known, and recorded from only a few locations in northern Bolivia, we can expect to see several other Amazonian specials including the rare and local Pearly-breasted Conebill, Horned Screamer, Amazonian and Great Antshrikes, Humaita and White-browed Antbird, Sungrebe, Yellow-chinned Spinetail, Varzea Schiffornis, Johanness Tody-Tyrant, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Fawn-breasted Wren and Dusky-tailed Flatbill. A short distance from Riberalta is an island of dry cerrado grassland called Pampa de San Lorenzo. A completely different habitat has a correspondingly different community of bird species. Our primary target here will be the tiny Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant, another rarely seen species amongst a supporting cast of Rusty-backed Antwren, White-eyed Parakeet, Red-and-green Macaw, numerous tanagers, the tricky Ocellated Crake, Natterers Slaty Antshrike and Horned Sungem.   • Day 14: Birding and flight back to Trinidad - Flight to La Paz

Morning flight to Trinidad. and we will drive only a short distance to the surrounding varzea forest in search of a few very important species such as Unicolored Thrush, Plain Softtail (known locally as Beni Softtail), ‘Beni’ (Velvet-fronted) Grackle with excellent chances of seeing Golden-collared, Blue-and-yellow and Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Hoatzin, Pale-legged Hornero, Plush-crested Jay, Greater Ani, Slender-billed Kite, and Great Antshrike. Then we will take our flight to La Paz and the flight connections to your home
