Birding Southeast Brazil
Day 1: Arrival in Sao Paulo
Welcome and transfer to Intervales State Park, the biggest preserved forest of Atlantic Forest in Brazil. A great place to bird, with many roads and trails to explore inside the park. In this location, we will have a chance to see Helmeted Woodpecker, Russet-winged Spadebill, Longtufted Screech-Owl, Violet-crowned Plovercrest, the threatened Blue-bellied Parrot, Bay-ringed Tyrannulet, White-bearded Antshrike, Black-fronted Piping-Guan, Spotted Bamboowren, Slaty Bristlefront, Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, Red-ruffed Fruitcrow, Bertonis Antbird, Rusty-breasted Nunlet, and many, many others.
Day 2 and 3: Full Days of Birding in Intervales State Park
Day 4: Birding drive to the Guarau area
We will do some birding in the morning and then we will head to Guarau Beach. This is an interesting region to be on the tour since it is the northern distribution limit of the range-restricted and endemic Red-tailed Parrot, We will go to a neighboring city called Itanhaém to search for the parrot. There are other species worth highlighting, like the Azure Jay, Buff-bellied Puffbird, and Unicolored Antwren. In case the group needs/is interested in Mangrove birds, we could try and look for Mangrove Rail, Bicolored Conebill, and several other species
Day 5: Birding and - Campos Do Jordao
Morning birding and then we will head to our birding spot situated in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range, Campos do Jordao is the highest Brazilian city with an altitude of 1628m. Here will bird the high-altitude Atlantic Forest for Vinaceous-breasted Parrot, Rufous-tailed Antthrush, Mouse-colored Tapaculo, the endangered Vinaceous-breasted Parrot, the weird-looking Long-trained Nightjar, and the endemic Black-capped Piprites, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, the endemic Serra do Mar Tyrannulet, Thick-billed Saltator, Diademed Tanager and Araucaria Tit-Spinetail, Comb Duck, Pinnated Bittern, Roseate Spoonbill, Black Hawk-Eagle, Rusty-barred Owl, Stygian Owl, Brazilian Ruby, White-spotted Woodpecker, Rufous-backed Antvireo, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Hooded Siskin, Scalloped Woodcreeper, and many more.
Day 6: Full-Day Birding in Campos Do Jordao
Day 7: Birding - Ubatuba
Birding and then we will drive to Ubatuba where it is possible to find more than 450 bird species. The majority of the forest is protected by the Serra do Mar State Park, where we will look for Tawny-throated Leaftosser, Buff-throated Purpletuft, Fork-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, the amazing and colorful Black-backed Tanager, Lemon-chested Greenlet and the Atlantic Forest endemic Brown-backed Parrotlet, Saw-billed Hermit, Reddish Hermit, Festive Coquette, Yellow-throated Woodpecker, Scaled Antbird, Black-legged Dacnis, Black-capped Becard, Ochre-breasted Foliage-gleaner, and other Atlantic Forest specialties
Day 8: Full-Day Birding in Ubatuba
Day 9: Birding drive to Paraty
Paraty is a charming and historic town, being one of the main destinations for tourists in Rio de Janeiro State. It is known for its paradisiac beaches and islands. The mountains and sea create an incredible landscape. But, beyond the beautiful beaches, it is almost a mandatory stop for birdwatchers that are crossing Rio de Janeiro. This place will provide to find the restricted and endangered Black-hooded Antwren, the endemic Yellow-eared Woodpecker, rare and endemic birds like the Pileated Parrot, Tawny-throated Leaftosser, Sao Paulo Tyrannulet, Fork-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, Gray-hooded Attila, White-necked Hawk, Mantled Hawk, and several others.
Day 10: Birding in Paraty and transfer to Itatiaia National Park
Birding and then we will head to the oldest National Park in Brazil. The wide altitudinal gradient houses a variety of environments from humid Atlantic Forest to Mountaintop Grasslands, ensuring a rich avifauna with more than 380 species. Summary: one of the most special birds here has the National Park name, the Itatiaia Spinetail, Rufous-tailed Antbird, Green-throated Euphonia, Black-and-gold Cotinga, Green-crowned Plovercrest, Bay-chested Warbling-Finch and the very cryptic Speckle-breasted Antpitta, Blackish-blue Seedeater, Frilled Coquette, the interesting Black-billed Scythebill, White-bibbed Antbird, and many other Atlantic Forest endemics
Day 11: Full Day Birding in Itatiaia National Park
Day 12: Birding to REGUA
We will bird in the morning and then we will go to Regua (Ecological Reserve of Guapiacu) a Private Reserve located at Cachoeiras do Macacu municipality in Rio de Janeiro State. More than 9,000 hectares of forest are protected by Nicholas Locke and his family that dedicated his life to protecting and conserving this region purchasing areas to conserve and restore the Atlantic Forest. The area comprises exuberant patches of Atlantic Forest, a good lodge inside the reserve, and skilled local bird guides that know each part of the forest and bird territories. It is an amazing place to go birding with more than 420 bird species. We will record in the highlands are Large-tailed Antshrike, the colorful and typic from the mountains of southeast Brazil Diademed Tanager, Shrike-like Cotinga, Striped Manakin, Minute Hermit, Masked Duck, Giant Snipe, Black-banded Owl, Salvadoris Antwren, Southern Antpipit, a second chance for Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Black-legged Dacnis, and many other Atlantic Forest birds.
Day 13: Birding and transfer to Nova Friburgo
We will head to the mountains region from Rio de Janeiro State, the main location for us here will be the Pico da Caledonia in Serra dos Orgaos with 2255 meters high, one of the highest mountains in Rio de Janeiro. Here we will look for Grey-winged Cotinga. Other species that we will record in the highlands are the Large-tailed Antshrike, the colorful Diademed Tanager, and second chances for the Itatiaia Spinetail
Day 14: ABirding and transfer to Arraial Do Cabo
Birding and then we will drive to the Restinga area which is a unique vegetation of Atlantic Forest near the sea, with shrubs, small trees, ferns, bromeliads, and cacti growing in a sandy soil. we will search for the endangered Restinga Antwren, White-cheeked Pintail, Brown Booby, Little Blue Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Grey-headed Gull, Hook-billed Kite, Sooretama Slaty Antshrike, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-Tyrant, Tropical Mockingbird, and the interesting Hangnest Tody-Tyrant.
Day 15: Birding in Arraial do Cabo. Transfer to Rio de Janeiro
Morning birding and then we will be transferred to Rio de Janeiro for our flight connections to Home
