Cusco Highlands, Manu Road & Tambopata

  •  DAY 1: Arrive in Lima

Usually, international flights arrive in Peru from 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm. We will pick you up at the airport and transfer you to your hotel selected. We mainly stay in the Miraflores area. Overnight in Lima Hotel

  • DAY 2: Morning Flight to Cusco – Limatambo/Mollepata

Morning flight to Cusco. There we will explore some of the Andean lakes Piuray & Huaypo located 30 minutes from Cusco. Then we will start our drive for 2 hours to Limatambo/Mollepata north of Cusco. We will make some stops after Limatambo looking for White-eared Puffbirds, Pale-breasted Spinetail. After checking into our hotel we will start our birding drive up to Soraypama searching for  Apurimac Brush-Finch (E),  Apurimac Spinetail (E), White-tufted Sunbean (E), Creamy-crested Spinetail (E), Rusty-fronted Canastero (E),  Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch (E), and many others species found along the road and if we are lucky Andean Condor flying over our heads. In the evening we will try to find Koepckes Screech-Owl and Buff-fronted Owl before or after dinner. Night in Mollepata Hotel

  •  DAY 3: Morning birding and Ollantaytambo

After breakfast, we will start our birding drive up to the base of the Mountain of Soraypampa, where we can find Vilcabamba Tapaculo (E), Golden-billed Saltator, Andean Flicker, Giant Conebill, Tit-like Dacnis, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Paramo Seedeater, Tufted Tit-tyrant, Andean Lapwing and several other species. We will be back in the afternoon for lunch and then we will head to the Sacred Valley to visit Emisfera Camp a nice place with feeders for hummingbirds and Tanagers. Dinner & Night in Ollantaytambo.

  •  DAY 4: Early drive to Abra Malaga – Carrizales – Ipal

Early drive up to Abra Malaga Pass at 3,400 m, where we will explore the main trail along the Polylepis forest for White-browed Tit-Spinetail (E), Tawny Spinetail, Junin Canastero (E), Puna Tapaculo, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant. Then we will back to the main road to keep driving into the other side of the Pass to get to the Carrizales area for Chusquea Bamboo and cloud forest specialist as Cusco Brush-Finch (E), Parodis Hemispingus (E), Inca Wren (E), Marcapata Spinetail (E) all endemics and also Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Golden-Collared Tanager, Blue-black Tanager, and several other species. Depending on our arrival at our next birding spot we will spend birding for the rest of the afternoon. Night in Ipal Ecolodge

  •  DAY 5: Full-day birding Ipal Ecolodge

 After breakfast, we will drive for 30 minutes to get to the main birding spot along the hill forest searching for mixed flocks of Tanagers, Flycatchers, Barbet, and some other species. This area provides a chance to find the endemics Masked Fruiteater (E), Creamy-bellied Antwren (E), Blue-banded Toucanet, Ocellated Piculet, Golden-headed and crested Quetzal. In the afternoon we will explore other spots and before dinner, we will try for some owls. Night in Ipal Ecolodge.

  •  DAY 6: Morning birding up to Carrizales/Abra Malaga – Cusco

This morning will depend on which birding spot we will choose for some missing species. We will pass through Ollantaytambo and then we will make some stops at Huaypo Lake for some other species. Dinner & Night in Cusco

  •  DAY 7: Birding Huacarpay Lake & drive to Manu Road

Today w will start an early morning drive South of Cusco which is located at Huacarpay Lake a nice protected area that holds some interesting species such as Streak-fronted Thornbirds, Rusty-fronted Canastero (Endemic), Giant Hummingbirds, Green-tailed and Black-tailed Trainbearers, White-browed Chat-Tyrant, Bearded Mountaineer (Endemic), Plumbeous Rail, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant and many other species. Then we will keep our birding drive up to Paucartambo Village for our last stop to get some extra supplies before reaching Acjanaco Pass and start birding the most popular road in Southern Peru “Manu Road” for mixed flocks at the upper Mountain Cloud Forest, Cloud Forest and finally arrive to our first lodge at 1,500 m. If time permits, we will arrive in time for the display of the Lyre-tailed Nightjar before dust. Night in Cock of the Rock Lodge or Manu Paradise Lodge

  •  DAY 8: Full-day birding along Manu Road

We will spend a full day birding up and down the road from our base in the heart of the lower subtropical zone. This area has high diversity, as it is where the cooler upper cloud forests transition to the warmer foothill habitat. We will search for colorful Tanager flocks and the mixed-species insectivore flocks that include Spinetails, Woodcreepers, Tyrant, Flycatchers, Yellow-rumped Antwren and Gray-mantled Wren, Golden-headed and Crested quetzals, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Andean and White-eared Solitaries and several other species. During the evening we will try to find some Owls. Night at Cock of the Rock Lodge or Manu Paradise Lodge

  •  DAY 9: Birding Manu downslope from San Pedro to Pilcopata

Early birding drive from our lodge at San Pedro area downslope of Manu Road where we will Guadua bamboo forest habitat and upper tropical forest, then pass through some second growth and open country areas lower in the Kosñipata valley where villages start until we get into our next birding lodge. According to our time arriving, we will spend the rest of the day birding at lodge trails. Night in Villa Carmen Station (Manu Biological Station)

  •  DAYS 10-11: Full-day Birding at Wayquecha, Feeding Stations, Machuwasi Pond

We will have two full days in this area. There is a great trail system that covers a number of habitats in which we will be looking for species of lower elevation. We may also do some night birding right outside the dining room. The low foothill forest has many things in common with the lowland Amazonian Forest, and we will see a suite of species we have not had until now. This includes specialties of Guadua bamboo-dominated woodlands such as Bamboo Antshrike, White-lined Antbird, Rufous-crested Woodpecker, White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, and many others. Near the lodge are some ponds that have Hoatzins, Sunbittern, and other aquatic species, as well as loud colonies of Yellow-rumped Caciques and Russet-backed Oropendolas, backed Tody-Flycatcher (E). We will also go across the Rio Pilcopata to the Atalaya Ridge to visit some hummingbird feeding stations and walk along the road looking for other species typical of the region. We will also explore a small lake for Horned Screamer. Nights in Villa Carmen Station (Manu Biological Station)

  •  DAY 12: Birding up to 3000m on Manu Road

Today we will have a morning birding if needed for some missing species and then we will start our birding drive up to the mountains on Manu Road on the way back to Cusco. We will have a chance to bird the foothill forest, lower cloud forest, and upper Cloud Forest. We usually arrive at our next birding lodge in the afternoon if time permits, and we will spend the rest of the day birding lodge surroundings. Night in Wayquecha Research Station

  •  DAY 13: Birding and Back to Cusco

We will have a full morning to explore the high-elevation forests around Wayqecha, we will head upslope closer to the tree line to see what is found in the elfin woodlands and Jalca (puna grassland/shrub interface, with Moustached Flowerpiercer, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, Urubamba Antpitta, Puna Tapaculo, and Grass-green, Hooded, Scarlet-bellied mountain-Tanagers, Golden-collared Tanager, Puna Thistletail and several other ones. We will then work our way down into the taller cloud forest, with its heavy epiphytic load and dense Chusquea bamboo understory. Here, mixed species flocks with such highlights as White-collared Jay, Mountain Cacique, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Masked Trogon, Barred Fruiteater, Marcapata Spinetail, and Fulvous Wren. After Lunch, we will start our drive back to Cusco. We may stop at certain areas for a break and for any bird sightings. Night in Cusco

  •  DAY 14: Morning flight to Puerto Maldonado – Lake Sandoval

Today we will change habitat from the Andes into the Amazon Rainforest. We will take the morning flight to Puerto Maldonado and there we will be welcome and transferred to the Main River to start our short boat trip to the entrance of Lake Sandoval. There is just one access trail from the river dock to the beginning of the lake where we will board a small boat with paddles to navigate along the amazing lake and cross to the other side where is located our lodge to stay. It all depends on our arrival time to spend birding along the trails or by boat searching for some shore birds. Night in Sandoval Lake Lodge.

  •  DAY 15: Full day of Birding

We will have a full day for birding along the trail system to cover most of the habitat to increase our number of species. We also navigate by boat around the lake early morning or late afternoon for some other species. In the evenings we will try to find some Owls. Night in Sandoval Lake Lodge

  •  DAY 16: Birding to Puerto Maldonado - Refugio Lodge

Morning birding to Puerto Maldonado. After checking on the main office, we will start our trip to our next and last lodge in Tambopata. Depending on our arrival time we will do some birding along the trails or canopy tower. Night in Refugio Amazonas Lodge

  •  DAY 17: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick 

Early morning boat trip upstream on Tambopata River where one hundred Macaws, Parrots, and Parakeets gather on the tree tops waiting for the best opportunity to fly down and perch on river bank cliff to eat some clay as part of their food cycle that they do every morning. We may also find other species of birds as Guans, Pigeons, and even howler monkeys like this particular with tasty clay to eat for them. As the area is open we might see also some toucans or raptors soaring in the sky. After this amazing and unforgettable experience, we will back to our lodge. Afternoon birding. Night in Refugio Amazonas Lodge

DAY 18: Mornin Birdng & Transfer out to Puerto Maldonado - Lima

We will do some birding and then we will be transferred to Puerto Maldonado where we can do some birding before our afternoon flight to Lima for White-throated, Purus Jacamars, Southern Lapwing, Red-breasted Blackbird, and many others. Transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport for your flight to Lima and Connections
