Marvelous Spatuletail
Although it is difficult to be flexible with a tour, we will try where possible to make changes depending on our birding success, to allow more time where it can be best spent. Thus, we might end up emphasizing one area more than another. Whatever we do, it will be close to the following to get the best birding trip for everybody.
DAY 1: Arrive in Lima
Usually, international flights arrive in Peru from 9:30 pm to 11:30 pm. We’ll pick you up at the airport and transfer you to your hotel selected. We mainly stay in the Near the airport for our next flight to start our biriding trip. Overnight in Lima Hotel
DAY 2: Flight to Tarapoto & Birding Cordillera Escalera - Tunnel - Aconabikh
Morning flight to Tarapoto. We will drive for about 30 minutes up to 800 m to reach the first birding spot which is the area for White-throated, Yellow-tufted Woodpeckers, Dotted Tanager, Rose-fronted, Garlepps Parakeets, Dotted, Yellow-bellied, Paradise, Bay-headed, Swallow, Yellow-crested, Magpie, Olive, Blue-grey, Silvery Tanagers, Blackish Pewee, Rough-legged Tyrannulet, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Cliff Flycatcher, Flavescent Flycatcher, Streaked Flycatcher, Curl-crested, Chestnut-eared, Ivory-billed Aracaris, Pink-throated Brilliant, Plumbeous Euphonia, Purple-throated Euphonia, Gilded Barbet, Black-faced, Blue Dacnis, Green, Purple Honeycreepers just to mention some of them. Then we will head to our next birding spot Koepecks Hermit (Aconabikh) which is a great place for Golden-headed, Blue-crowned, Blue-backed, Fiery-capped Manakins, Thrush-like Antpitta, Peruvian Antwarbler, Black-faced Antthrush, Red-billed Toucanet, Black-faced Antbird, White-flanked Antwren, Pygmy Antwren, Golden-collared Woodpecker, Spixs Guan, Golden-collared Toucanet and with luck Hairy-crested Antbird, and White-plumed Antbird. By the feeders Koepckes Hermit, Goulds Jewelfront, Black-throated Mango, White-necked Jacobin, and other species. Night in Aconabith Lodge
DAY 3: Birding to Arena Blanca Reserve
Early birding along the trails and along the main road for mixed flocks of tanagers, flycatchers on our way to our next birding spot. We will drive around 3 hours with some stops along the road specially for Oilbird roosting place. We usually arrive late afternoon and if time permits we wil enjoin the hummingbirds feeders or the others feeders for tinamous and tanagers. Then we will try for some owls before or after dinner. Night in Arena Blanca Lodge.
DAY 4: Birding - Drive up to Abra Patricia Mountains
Morning birding for some missing species. Then we will head up to Alto Mayo Reserve with a stop at Afluente spot where usually we find mixed flocks and at the place Llanteria for the Hummingbird Feeders for Ecuadorian Piedtail, Napo Sabrewing, Green Hermit, Fork-tailed Woodnymph and some other species. Then we will visit Fundo Alto Nieva Station for other feeders for Greenish Puggleg, Royal Sunangel, Long-tailed Sylph, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, and Booted Ratquet-Tail. Depending on our arrival we will watch the hummingbird feeders and lodge surroundings. If time permits we will search for White-throated Screech-Owl no far from the lodge. We can try for the restricted Long-whiskered Owlet but that spot is a 2 km hike downhill, which is a bit challenging to walk for the distance but always there is a chance. DAY 5: Full-day birding along Abra Patricia Forest
Today we will spend time searching for mixed flocks species including Grass-green Tanager, Yellow-scarfed Tanager (E), Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Russet-crowned Warbler, Inca Flycatcher (E), Green and Black Fruiteater, Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager, Blue and Black Tanager, Spectacled Redstar and many more. Then We will explore the lower part of the Main road Golden-naped Tanager, Huallaga Tanager, Yellow-breasted Antwren, Ash-throated Antwren (E), Russet Antshrike, Lined Antshrike, Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner, Spotted Barbtail, Ash-browed Spinetail, Ornate Flycatcher, Sepia-capped Flycatcher, Marble-faced Bristle-tyrant, Peruvian Tyrannulet, Olivaceous Greenlet, Blackish Antbird, Lanceolated Monklet, Andean Cock-of-the Rock, Scaled Fruiteater and many other species. Then we will head to Cocachimba near Gocta Waterfall. Night in Hotel
DAY 6: Birding for Endemics and Drive to Pomacochas
Morning birding for Buff-bellied Tanager, Marañon Thrush, Marañon Crescentchest, Peruvian Pigeon, Marvelous Spatuletail all Endemics and several others species. Then we wil head back to the main road to Pomacochas lake town. Then we will explore the edge of the Lake for Plumbeous Rail and a small patch of forest for Lined-cheeked Spinetail, Black-crested Warbler, Rufous-capped Antshrike, and Buff-bellied Tanager. Dinner and night in Pomacochas town.
DAY 7: San Lorenzo Trail for Pale-billed Antpitta
Early birding up is the only available spot for the restricted, endangered & Endemic Pale-billed Antpitta with good luck we can watch it! The trail is a bit challenging for the long distance about 2 km uphill to get to the spot. There is also along the trail a chance to find some other species such as Lacrimose, Blue-winged, Chestnut-bellied, Hooded Mountain-Tanagers, Peruvian Wren (E), Russet-mantled Softtail (E), Black-throated Tody-tyrant, Spectacled Redstart, Chestnut-breasted Chlorophonia, Blue-and-black Tanager, Cinnamon Flycatcher, Mountain Velvetbreast, Red-crested Cotinga, Plain-tailed Wren, Oleaginous Hemispingus, Rufous Spinetail, Golden-plumed Parakeet some times seen along the mountain ridge. After a Full morning, we will start our birding drive to Moyobamba, Waqanki Lodge. Late afternoon we will try to find Band-bellied, Black-banded, Stripe Owls, and Tropical Screech-Owl. Dinner and night in Waqanki Lodge
DAY 8: Full-day Birding at different birding spots
Early birding at Morro de Calzada Reserve where hold several species such us Blue-crowned, Violaceus, White-tailed Trogons, Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Gilded Barbet, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Short-crested Flycatcher, Mishana Tyrannulet (E), Painted Manakin (E), Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, Western Striolated Puffbird, Pearly-vented, and Stripe-necked Tody-tyrants, Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, Red-shouldered Tanager, Paradise, Blued-necked Tanagers, Black-bellied Tanager (E), Lafresnayes Piculet and many more. Then we will explore a small pond for Masked Duck as the unique spot available to find in Northern Peru. In the afternoon we will spend time at the hummingbird place for Rufous-crested coquette, Black-throated Hermit, Brown Violetear, Grey-breasted Sabrewing, White-chinned Sapphire, White-necked Jacobin, Great-billed Hermit, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Fork-tailed Woodnymph and many other species according to the season. Then we will head to Tarapoto airport for our flight to Lima and connections.
