Peru Birding North & South
- DAY 1: Arrive in Lima-Peru
We welcome you to Peru at the airport and transfer you to the hotel selected for this tour. Night in Lima Hotel
- DAY 2: Pantanos de Villa-Pucusana / Chiclayo
Today we will start our amazing birding trip by visiting a lovely reserve (Pantanos de Villa) Villa Marshes wetland for Great Grebe, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Yellow-hooded Blackbird, White-cheeked Pintail, and several other species resident and migrants. After a few hours of birding along the wetland, we will head to Pucusana Bay fishing port for our short semi-pelagic boat trip searching for Humboldt Penguin, Endemic Surf Cinclodes, Guanay, Red-legged Cormorant, Blackish Oystercatchers. After a great birding day, we will return to Lima airport for our afternoon flight to Chiclayo. If time permits we will look for the endemic Peruvian Plantcutter. Dinner & Night in Chiclayo
- DAY 3: Birding for Peruvian Plantcutter- Olmos
Morning birding Motupe area located south of Chiclayo Town where we will find patches of Carob Trees close to the Pacific Ocean for Peruvian Plantcutter and several other species are found. Then birding around the small Eten wetland and coastal area for shore birds. Then we will head to Olmos town. Dinner & Night in Olmos
- DAY 4: Search for Tumbessian and Piura specialties
Early drive to Quebrada Limon, a communal-protected forest for White-winged Guan (E), Tumbes Tyrant (E), Tumbes Sparrow (E), Tumbes Pewee (E), Pacific Elaenia (E), Ecuadorian Trogon, Guayaquil Woodpecker, Ecuadorian Piculet, Elegant Crescentchest, White-headed Brush-finch, Whooping Motmot, White-edged Oriol, White-tailed Jay, Streak-headed Woodcreeper, Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Speckled-Chested Wren, and several other found along this amazing birding spot. After some hours of birding, we will back to our hotel. Dinner & Night in Olmos
- DAY 5: Birding Abra Porculla - Jaen
We will head to Limon de Porculla for Piura Chat-tyrant (E), Black-cowled Saltator, Chapmans Antshrike, White-winged, and Bay-crowned Brush-Finch, Plumbeous-backed Thrush, Gray and Gold Warbler, Three-banded Warbler, Henna-Hooded Foliage-Gleaner, and several other species. Then we will head to Jaen and after all accommodation, we will explore some of the birding spots before dust. Dinner & Night in Jaen
- DAY 6: Birding to Pomacochas - Marvelous Spatuletail
Morning birding along the several spots near Jaen and after a whole morning birding we will head to Huembo Center for Marvelous Spatuletail if we are lucky to see today if not we will go back the next day. Night in Pomacochas
- DAY 7: Birding San Lorenzo trail - Huembo Center
Today we will have a chance to explore San Lorenzo Trail for Pale-billed Antpitta(E), and Peruvian Wren (E), although this trail is a bit difficult to walk on the steps and a variety of climates in the mountain ridge forest for certain species found along the trail. Or we can just go birding at Huembo Center for the hummingbird feeders and if time permits we will explore near the lake for Plumbeous Rail, Puna Snipe, and some other extra species. - DAY 8: Birdig to Abra Patricia - Afluente
Early start birding along the Abra Patricia mountains for mixed flocks of tanagers, flycatchers, and several other target species, we also stop at Afluente spot for the hummingbird feeders where we can find there as the main targets are Ecuadorian Piedtail, Napo Saphirewing. Then after a full day of birding, we will arrive at our next birding lodge. And if time permits we will try to find the amazing Long-whiskered Owlet. Night in Owlet Lodge - Abra Patricia.
- DAY 9: Full day of birding
We will have a full day of birding along the trails, main road, and Afluente, and before dinner, we will try for the restricted Long-whiskered Owlet. Night in Owlet Lodge
- DAY 10: Birding to Moyobamba - Waqanki Lodge
Early birding drive to Arena Blanca Reserve for tinamou feeders, Tanagers and Hummingbirds. Then we will head to Moyobamba where we will enjoin the hummingbird garden and feeders. We will do some Owls search before or after dinner. Night in Waqanki Lodge
- DAY 11: Birding Morro de Calzada - Tarapoto
Morning birding for Fiery-throated Fruiteater, Painted Manakin (E), Ash-breasted Antwren (E), and Mishana Tyrannulet (E), we will bird also Morro de Calzada Reserve. And after Lunch, we will start a birding drive to Tarapoto with an obligatory stop for Oilbird. If time permits we will bird near Laguna Ricuricocha for Comb Duck, Black-bellied whistling-duck, and the rice fields for Spotted Rail. Night in Tarapoto.
- Day 12: Birding Cordillera Escalera - Flight to Lima
Early drive to Cordillera Escalera preserve which holds several species of Tanagers, Flycatchers, hummingbirds, and toucans. On the other side of the mountain forest, there is a place known as Aconabith where we can enjoin with hummingbird feeders and a popular Golden-headed Manakin Lek and then we will back to Tarapoto Airport for our afternoon flight to Lima. Night in Lima
- DAY 13: Birding Lomas de Lachay - Flight to Cusco
Early drive for 2 hours north of Lima to reach Paraiso Lagoon for shore birds, Terns, Gulls, Chilean Flamingo, and several others. Then we will go to Lomas de Lachay Reserve for Least Seedsnipe, Coastal, Grayish, Thick-billed Miners, Band-tailed Sierra-Finch, Cactus Canastero, Raimondi’s Yellow-Finch, Peruvian Thick-Knee. After great morning birding, we will go back to Lima airport for our afternoon flight to Cusco. There, we will meet our driver for the rest of the trip. We will head north of Cusco to Limatambo/Mollepata. We will try to find Koecpkes Screech-Owl before dinner or after. Night in Mollepata.
DAY 14: Birding for endemics
Early drive to Limatambo and Soraypampa road searching for White-eared Puffbird, Apurimac Brush-Finch, Vilcabamba Tapaculo, Apurimac Spinetail, White-tufted Sunbean, Creamy-crested Spinetail, Rusty-fronted Canastero, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, and many others species found along the road. Then we will head to Sacred Valley to visit the Santuario de Colibries. Then we will go to Ollantaytambo. Night in Ollantaytambo
DAY 15: Birding to Abra Malaga - Carrizales
Early drive to Abra Malaga Pass where we will search along Polylepis forest for White-browed Tit-Spinetail, Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, Puna Tapaculo, and Royal Cinclodes. After, we will continue our trip to Carrizales for Cuzco Brush-Finch, Paradodi’s Hemminpingus, Maracapata Spinetail, Inca Wren, Violet-fronted Startfronlet, and several other species. Night in Ipal Ecolodge
DAY 16: Search for Masked Fruiteater - Carrizales - Ollantaytambo
Early birding for Masked fruiteater, Creamy-bellied Antwren, Ocellated Piculet, Golden-headed Quetzal, Versicolored barbet, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, and many more. Then we will spend birding on our way back to Ollantaytambo. Night in Ollantaytambo
DAY 17: Machu Picchu Time! - Cusco
Early train ride to Aguas Caliente and then a bus transfer up to the entrance of the Inca Ruin. There we will check in and start to enjoin one of the wonders of the world Machu Picchu. After a full morning around the amazing Inca site, we will start our way back to Cusco as we came. Night in Cusco.
DAY 18: Birding drive to Manu Road
Today we will start our birding time on the most popular road in the world “Manu Road”. We will start first at Huacarpay Lake for a few hours of birding. Then we will start our birding drive to Paucartambo and Acjanaco Pass where starts Manu National Park. The road starts at 3,300 m and descends to 500 m at the end. The birding activity along Manu Road is searching for mixed flocks of birds or any sighting along the drive to get our first lodge. Night in Cock of the Rock or Manu Paradise Lodge
DAY 19: Birding to the Foothill forest on Manu Road
Early birding along the Manu Road & lodge surroundings. We will visit the only place on Manu Road for Cock of the Rock lek. After lunch, we will continue our birding day to lower elevations with a visit to new places with feeders for hummingbirds, Tanagers, and other species. Night in Villa Carmen Station (Manu Biolodge)
DAY 20: Full-days birding - Mirador Pico de Oz/ Inka Amazonia
We will spend two full days birding along the bamboo forest for specialist species such as Manu, striated, Antbirds, Ornate, Dot-winged Antwrens, Peruvian Recurvebill, and other species that we can find along the trails. We will have also time to visit the new local protection of nature conservation outside Pilcopata town where they have feeders for hummingbirds, Tanagers, and Antpittas. In the night, we will try to find some Owls before or after dinner. Night in Villa Carmen Station
DAY 21: Manu Birding drive Up to 3,000 mt
Early birding and then we will start our birding drive back to the mountains searching for some missing species. Night in Wayquecha Station
DAY 22: Birding to Cusco/Flight to Puerto Maldonado - Sandoval Lake
Early birding for some extra species. Then we will head back to Cusco Airport for our flight to Tambopata Puerto Maldonado. There we will have a short boat trip on the main river Madre de Dios to the entrance to Lake Sandoval located in Tambopata National Reserve. There is only one access to get the lake and our lodge
DAY 23: Full day of Birding
Today we will explore the oxbow Lake Sandoval for Kingfishers, herons, and with good luck Giant River Otters. And for the rest of the day, we will walk along some of the trails for more Amazonian species. Nights in Sandoval Lodge
DAY 24: Birding to Puerto Maldonado - Refugio Amazonas Lodge
Morning birding for some extra species and then we will back to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the next lodge office to start our birding trip to the Tambopata River. After all accommodation, we will do some afternoon birding along the trails or Canopy Tower. Night in Refugio Amazonas Lodge
DAY 25: Macaw Clay Lick - Trails
Today we will start early morning. We will navigate by boat upstream on the Tambopata River to arrive at the area of the Macaws, Parrots, parakeets, and several other species. The place is known as Chuncho Macaw Lick where every morning hundreds of them meet to Gathering and try to eat the click from the river bank where is a unique place to see them in huge numbers and enjoin their colors and vocalizations. After this Amazing experience, we will back to our Lodge. In the afternoon we will spend some time birding along the trails or the canopy tower. Night in Refugio Amazonas Lodge
DAY 26: Birding and transfer to Puerto Maldonado
Morning birding if time permits, then we will be transferred out to Puerto Maldonado office. Then we will have some hours to spend birding before our afternoon flight to Lima.
